Gas Works, Princess Road, Ashton
Can anyone tell me when this ceased to function?
I seem to remember conversion to natural gas was 1966/67, but do not know if the gas production on this site had already ceased by then.

As I was told by an ex employed gas works chap he said it had even closed for 40 years he also said it had been left so long because of the contamination in the ground also they may have to take the top 4 feet of earth off I remember going for a barrow full of coke for my Grandad

We would occasionally deliver them a wagonload of coal. That would have been late1950's/early 1960's.
Changeover from coal gas to natural gas occurred mid 1960's, so production would have ceased then. I think the gasometer remained active beyond this date, I guess it had become a storage site, but I do not know for how long that had continued.
